Three Eagles Selected for All-GSAC Baseball Team

Baseball Team Wraps up Season

May. 11, 2010 By Jenna Bartlo

Biola was well represented on the 2010 All-Golden State Athletic Conference baseball team as infielders Garrett Leon and Boone Farrington were joined by outfielder Vinnie Fayard on the 18-man squad announced by the conference office on Tuesday, May 11, 2010.

Fayard, a sophomore from Corona, led the team in six offensive categories this season including posting a team-best .409 batting average. Fayard, who broke onto the scene last season with an impressive .338 average as a true freshman, did not suffer a sophomore slump, recording 14 home runs and 53 RBIs on the season. He also finished third in batting average in the conference, third in hits (76) and second in slugging percentage (.731).

Fayard's best game of the season came late in February when the sophomore belted four home runs and added a school-record tying eight RBIs in the Eagles' come-from-behind win over Point Loma Nazarene. Biola was down 11-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth but scored eight times to take the lead. In the eight, Fayard led off with a solo home run, then gave Biola its first lead of the game with a two-out, three-run home run. Point Loma would tie the game in the ninth and take the lead back in the 10th. But Fayard responded with a three-run shot with one out in the 10th to give the Eagles the walk-off win.

Fayard finished the season strong, going 9-for-17 (.529) with a home run, four doubles, four runs scored and two RBIs in the final series against The Master's.

Leon, a junior infielder from Fountain Valley, posted a .363 batting average for the season, tying for the team lead in home runs (14) and RBIs (53) with Fayard. He ranked sixth in the GSAC in slugging percentage, posting a mark of .679. He also was sixth in the conference in RBIs, eighth in hits (69) and fifth in doubles with a team-best 18.

Leon wasted no time making his presence felt on the team, doing 3-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBIs in Biola's first game of the season. It was the first of a team-best 14 multi-RBI games that included a six-RBI performance at San Diego Christian where he finished a triple short of the cycle.

Farrington, a sophomore from Winchester, Oregon, transferred to Biola from Northwest Nazarene University. He is one of Biola's most consistent hitters this season, batting .388 from the lead-off spot and reaching base in all but three of the 44 games he played in. Farrington batted .473 in the lead-off spot and recorded 19 multi-hit games.

Farrington really hit his stride late in the season and posted his best numbers in the series against eventual GSAC Champion Cal Baptist in mid-April. The sophomore went 11-for-18 (.611) in the series with six runs scored and four RBIs.

Biola wrapped up its season last week, finishing the year at 24-22 and missing the GSAC playoffs by one game.
